On 12 September 2017, the Environment Agency (EA) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formally agreeing to share intelligence and carry out operations to stop illegal waste carriers and improve road safety in England. It is particularly intended to ensure earlier and wider enforcement against seriously, and serially, non-compliant waste industry vehicles and carriers
While the EA and the DVSA have already undertaken joint enforcement operations against waste crime, the MoU formally agrees that:
- DVSA staff will work within EA teams to ensure enforcement action is coordinated and effective.
- Information and intelligence will be shared between the two agencies to increase the effectiveness of roadside enforcement activity.
- Enforcement teams will be provided with up-to-date and relevant intelligence about waste industry operators.
It is particularly intended to ensure earlier and wider enforcement against seriously, and serially, non-compliant waste industry vehicles and carriers.
Both agencies are encouraging anyone using a waste carrier to dispose of their waste to check with the EA that it is a correctly registered waste carrier.
Being concerned in the transportation, buying, selling or disposal of waste can be complicated and highly regulated.
