It has been reported this week that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), who oversee the implementation and regulation of GDPR in the UK, have so far been “inundated” with calls to their office from businesses looking for advice on how to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) since it came into force on 25 May 2018. Many of these enquiries apparently concern what data can or cannot be processed.
The regulator has introduced a helpline specifically for small- and medium-sized businesses to answer questions regarding GDPR, but it is already reporting delays of up to an hour in answering calls. The majority of these calls have been reportedly from businesses seeking to clarify whether they are doing things correctly, where they have not had legal expertise to advise them.
